Pradnya and I spent the Memorial Day weekend in Seattle. Olympic national park was by far the most favourite part of the trip. Sunday evening we drove up to Hurricane Ridge, the highest car-accessible part of the park. There, we spotted a number of deers grazing in a distance. One of the more adventurous ones came close to us. As she approached us, I snapped a picture of her with a few more in the background.

The above picture was taken with Nikon D80 with 70-300 mm lens set at 95 mm focal length. Isn’t she a beauty! I moved closer and zoomed in further to take another picture of this gorgeous soul.

What reminded me of these deer pictures is that IIT-M campus, which borders on Guindy National Park, houses a protected forest-land. Since moving here last Thursday, I have been seeing deers roaming around the campus every day. These spotted deers, called “Cheetals”, (Axis axis) are used to having humans around and do not run away if you approach them to take a picture.
Another deer in the campus is the Black Buck. Black bucks are extremely shy and fussy animals. So far, I haven’t seen one, although my friends and colleagues have. Unlike Cheetals, black bucks do not prefer human presence and are more comfortable in pasture-lands instead of forests. Prakriti, the wildlife club of IITM has more information about the flora and fauna in the campus.
